Managing and Resolving Period Pain Through Visceral Manipulation

Period Pain does not have to rule your life! Many women suffer needlessly each month, being told that, "Pain is normal; here, take these pills!" Simple uterine misalignments often place physical pressure on the cervix and uterus. When under mechanical stress, the cervix is less able to allow menstrual flow; the uterus now has to contract harder to eject blood and tissue through the cervix. This is a period cramp.


If the uterus itself is being 'stretched' because of distension in the ligaments supporting its place in the pelvis, it's natural contractions will become painful. The uterus wall is muscular and is active in keeping itself ready for the next reproductive cycle, the whole reason for the monthly period. If the muscle is not able to contract easily, it just has to push harder as its function during menses is 'not negotiable' to the body.


Visceral Manipulation is a gentle and respectful technique to help women resolve anatomical mal-placement and dysfunction of their otherwise 'normal' pelvis. When good physical placement is restored, the reason for much of the pain and cramping is similarly resolved. The ideal is that every woman only feels her period coming on immediately before commencement of flow; completing a painless period a few days later. A period should almost come as a surprise in ideal circumstances.


In the Author's clinical observations, the most common uterine/cervix misalignments are a retroverted uterus (the cervix and uterus have fallen rearwards, towards the rectum), followed by a lateral deflection where the uterus and/or cervix are being forced to one side or the other, twisting the cervix/vagina junction. A less common misalignment is an antegrade deflection (where the uterus & cervix are drawn forward, towards the front of the underlying bladder).


In each case, the strong ligaments that hold the uterus and cervix in anatomical alignment have some level of dysfunction, causing mechanical pressure on the cervix. This restricts the ability of the cervix to allow menstrual flow to pass through easily. When this happens, the uterus still has to eject the unused placental tissue and so contracts far more forcefully. These forceful contractions are the mechanism of the all-too-familiar period cramp.


Visceral Manipulation, extensively pioneered by JP Barrall, is a treatment modality where the practitioner uses gentle, direct pressure over the various structures and ligaments in an effort to rebalance the anatomical relationships within the pelvis (and body, of course). The experience varies from practitioners to practitioner with two primary groups of techniques, 'short lever' and 'long lever'.


Short lever technique is where most practitioners start. This is where pressure is placed directly on each problematic point, using movement of the practitioner's fingers and the client's body to facilitate direct manipulation of each ligament in turn. This is the most 'teachable' method and is incredibly effective in its own right.


The author uses long lever techniques resulting in quite a different clinical experience. The client is fully clothed and is moved through a series of flexes and stretches whilst a very gentle pressure is held over the problematic structures. The aim of long lever techniques is to influence the body to find, recognise and resolve its own restrictions using its own mechanisms.


Change does not come from the practitioner, but rather, from the client's own being. Results 'originating' from the client's own body are effective and immediate. No releases or changes are ever forced upon the body; that is trauma and bullying. All effective body work is about helping the [woman's] body find its own healthful balance.


Whilst not all period pain can be resolved so easily, I see excellent results in three to five visits in many cases. The first two or three visits are typically a fortnight apart and then monthly (for obvious reasons) from there. Caesarean deliveries, accidents, falls, lifting injuries and poor postural habits can all contribute to period pain. In most cases, causes of this nature are quite resolvable with gentle and painless visceral manipulation.


Painful intercourse, post-orgasm spasms and pain, as well as anorgasmia (inability to achieve orgasm) can also originate for the same reasons of organ and ligament imbalances. These will be detailed in upcoming articles, but for now, most cases in this group will respond well to visceral manipulation too.

The Hidden Truth About Effective ADHD Treatment - Part 1

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) involve a collection of symptoms including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviours. The term ADD has virtually been replaced with ADHD, since it includes two of the most common symptoms of the condition, namely, inattention and hyperactive-impulsive behaviour.


Only children who struggle with inattention and hyperactive or impulsive behaviours ALL THE TIME are deemed to have ADHD. For instance, if these symptoms are displayed at school and not at home, or vice versa, they are considered NOT to have the disorder. Unfortunately, this is where most of the misdiagnosis happens.


Perhaps the most difficult aspect of dealing with a child, a teen, or a spouse is not knowing what is causing the disturbing behaviour, and especially not knowing how to help. Unfortunately, most experts are as perplexed as everyone else and this should come as no surprise.


There are, however, many plausible theories:


One theory blames genetic predisposition, and studies are currently underway attempting to link ADHD to specific genes (1). From my perspective, based upon science and research, genetic expression if far and wide more important and valid than genetic predisposition, but we will leave this topic for another article at a later time. Another theory is exposure to environmental toxins. One study conducted in 2006 linked a mother's use of cigarettes, alcohol or other drugs increased the chances for ADHD in her child. They also linked the increased risk of ADHD in lead exposure and smoking during pregnancy (2). This also should come of no absolute surprise.


As is typical of the medical model, nutrition is often disregarded as a contributing element. Being a Kanata Chiropractor may not make me an expert on this particular topic, but it is my opinion that NUTRITION MAY HOLD THE KEY TO TREATING ADHD!!! It doesn't take an expert to tell us that food choices today for both children and adults alike are extremely poor. Is it truly possible to expect abnormal behaviour from a child who is fed, for lack of a better word, CRAP? These abnormal behavioural traits being that of what most medical experts would refer to signs and symptoms of ADHD! There are numerous literatures out there that support the hypothesis that refined grains, sugars, processed food filled with chemicals, juices, and soft drinks create these very behavioural traits. My question is: Whatever happened to pure water as a source of fluids for our children? We must also take into account the decreasing amount of vegetables and omega 3's in most of our children's diets. Vegetables provide the body with the essential vitamins and nutrients that we need for survival and Omega 3's support brain function, blood sugar metabolism, and childhood development to name a few. It is impossible to have a healthy functioning and developing brain without the critical ingredients it requires to do so.


If we look to the highly recognized research of Dr. Lendon Smith, who passed away some time ago, we find that he had been successfully treating and relieving ADHD symptoms with nutrition and dietary interventions for decades. Whatever happened to the continuing of his work after his death is questionable. He realized that drugs like Ritalin were not the answer for ADHD right from the start which I think should still be considered in today's society before it is so radically distributed to children. For years, drug companies have been churning out various medications to try to stem this growing epidemic. It is no great secret that drug companies have been producing mass quantities of medication to treat ADHD, the major players being, Ritalin®, Concerta®, Adderall®, and Strattera® before even considering changing the nutritional components of a child's lifestyle.

Lean Medical Care

When I was 21, a pickup truck backed into me, knocking me down so hard that my glasses fell off and a class ring I was wearing flew off. I didn't think much about it, but later in life I started having some back problems. A friend referred me to a chiropractor.


I've been going to him for 15 years about twice a year when I get jammed up. He straightens me out.


Recently, I called for an appointment but he was out of town. His voicemail referred me to a nearby chiropractor. I called and made an appointment. While the treatment to straighten me out was pretty much the same, the experience was magically different. The new chiropractor runs a lean practice; my existing chiropractor runs a mass production one.


Current Chiropractor's Process


My existing chiropractor has you sign in and fill out a sheet describing your symptoms which takes five-to-ten minutes. His assistant then leads you into one of three examination rooms, where you wait.


In essence, he has a batch size of three. After the treatment, the doctor spends a few minutes filling out paperwork to be added to your file.


A typical visit takes about an hour. I didn't realize how unsatisfactory this was until I visited the new chiropractor.


New Chiropractor's Process


I arrived a few minutes before my appointment expecting to have to fill out some paperwork. Instead, the doctor was ready and I was immediately led into her single exam room. She asked me a few questions and then started the exam. When she finished the treatment, she immediately turned to a computer terminal and using a touch screen, entered her notes about my treatment (in essence an electronic medical record which means little filing). She asked me to fill out some basic paperwork on my way out. She suggested I do a followup with my chiropractor in about a week.


I was in and out in 15 minutes. I couldn't believe it. And she was $12 cheaper! Then I realized that she has a much smaller office (fewer exam rooms), so her fixed costs are lower. She uses electronic medical records, so her filing room is much smaller. I knew I had to get another glimpse into this operation. So, since my chiropractor was still going to be out of town, I scheduled a followup visit.


The following week, I walked in as the new chiropractor was finishing with her current patient. I was immediately led into the exam room. We talked briefly about my progress; she adjusted my back; I paid and I was out in 15 minutes. Wow! Now that's my kind of patient care.


With my existing chiropractor, I knew that if I arrived a little late, I'd still have plenty of time to do the paperwork and get in some reading. With the new chiropractor, I know that I'd better be on time. Her speed demands my timeliness without ever having to say anything, post any signs or sign anything.


Time is Money!


Medical care is no exception. My current chiropractor creates an assembly line with three patients in the queue at any time. Which means we have to wait 20-30 minutes in the exam room reading out-of-date magazines to fill the time while our back continues to spasm or be in pain.


I realized that my medical doctor also has a waiting room and numerous exam rooms to create a batch of three-to-five patients. It takes an hour to see her as well, even if you go first thing in the morning.


This new chiropractor understands the secrets of one-piece flow. One patient at a time, one exam room, and no "work" in process. Notes are entered immediately before you leave the room, not written on a piece of paper that needs to be filed.

E Coli: How To Protect Yourself

Dear Health-Minded Readers,


Recently in the news we heard of what the World Health Organization called the 'world's largest E.coli outbreak' in Germany, France and other parts of Europe. The outbreak affected mostly bean and seed sprouts, lentils and adzuki beans and there were several fatalities from it.


Fortunately, that particular E.coli outbreak did not affect the United States. However, from time to time, E.coli contaminations of food do break out across the United States, particularly in the warmer weather months. In fact, just last month there was an outbreak of E.coli in hazelnuts that spread across 3 states!


The truth is, you have to be very careful with the hygiene of your food. Many of my patients who have heard the news of these outbreaks have asked me how they could protect themselves against a possible E.coli contamination of their food. It's not difficult and really only takes a little extra effort on your part to make sure you don't become ill from possible E.coli contaminated foods.


Protecting Yourself From E.Coli


E.coli contaminations occur when food comes in contact with feces, either animal or human, somehow. Most often, people associate E.coli contaminations with meat but other foods, like all types of produce, can also become contaminated by exposure to feces somewhere along the processing route. As I tell my patients, learning how to properly store and cook your food is the best hedge against possible unknown E.coli contamination of your food. Here is my advice:


Cook At Proper Heat: Cooking meats, poultry and fish to the proper temperature will kill any possible E.coli bacteria that may be present. Cook all red meat to a temperature of 160 degrees (need a food thermometer). Cook all white meat (poultry like chicken, turkey) and fish to 180 degrees. Watch for undercooked meats in restaurants, be wary ordering rare meats.


Buy Them Last: When grocery shopping, buy your meat, fish and poultry last. Don't put it in your cart and walk around the store while browsing other items to buy. This gives your meat a chance to thaw and bacteria to grow before you leave the store.


Thaw Them Carefully: Do not try to thaw meats at room temperature quickly, especially in warm weather. Let them thaw slowly in the refrigerator on the higher shelves. Or, you can thaw quickly in a microwave if you are going to cook it immediately.


Keep it Cool: Similarly, if you have a long trip home from the grocery store and it's a warm day, you might want to consider having a small portable cooler set up in the backseat or trunk with ice in it where you can put your meat and poultry to keep it frozen on the way home. Also, turn your AC up a little cooler for the ride home.


Food storage: Make sure your refrigerator/freezer is cold enough. Measure the temperature to be sure your refrigerator is 41 degrees as E.coli (and other bacteria) can start growing at 45 degrees. If you plan on eating your meat or poultry later that day or the next morning, be sure to store it on the lower shelves of your refrigerator where it is colder.


Keep Counters Clean: When preparing meat, poultry on your countertop, be sure to wipe your counter clean with a disinfectant wipe and then rinse and let it air dry before preparing raw meat on it. Or, use a large, clean cookie sheet to prepare meat.


Clean Your Produce: Be sure to use a vegetable scrubber and/or produce wash to get rid of any bacterial remnant that may have gotten on produce during processing and/or shipping. You can make your own produce wash by using equal parts clean water and white vinegar, enough to cover your produce completely, and place your fruits and vegetables in the solution for 15 minutes. Scrub the skins of the produce (this is not possible to do with lettuce, and other leafy produce) with a scrubber. Be sure to rinse the produce well before preparing.


Watch Raw Foods: Although many people like to eat their produce raw to retain more vitamin content, this can add to the risk of a possible bacterial contamination. Steaming at a high temperature can help to kill bacteria and not lessen vitamin content.

For another alternative, you can get some holy basil leaves, crush them to extract the juice and thrice a day you will dab the skin with the juice which arrests the germs growth and treats the ringworm. Yeast Intolerance - Reasons and Stressors

Taking Control of Your Health With Baseline Testing and Monitoring

Do you make your health a priority? Get up a little earlier to workout and search out healthy recipes? If you do, you get a pat on the back! Are you also tracking what you are doing so you know if you're staying the course? Deciding to improve your health and prevent disease is an admirable goal, but to reach it you need to be tracking the steps you are taking. If you don't know if you've gotten there or where you are on the path toward your goals, you won't get the satisfaction of knowing you have arrived.


Were you one of the millions of people who set out on New Year's Day to lose weight, stop smoking or eat right? If you did, one of the first steps you should have taken is a realistic assessment of where you were and where you wanted to be. If your "bad" cholesterol or LDL is too high you can lay out a plan to eat more fruits and vegetables, cut back on the red meat and trans fats, and start exercising. This will also increase your "good" cholesterol, the HDL, and help you lose weight if that is also a goal. Conversely, losing weight will help with your cholesterol levels.


If your glucose level is too high, if could be an indication that you have or are on your way to developing diabetes. Exercising and reducing the amount of sugar you eat can prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and give you control over your long term health. Ultimately, you are the only one who can make a positive change that lasts.


When you eat foods that are good for you, exercising and losing weight can be measured objectively; with the numbers on the scale, the dress or pants size, the amount of time spent exercising and the test results that you get at your lab testing center or doctor's office. Monitoring your weight daily when you embark on a weight loss program is critical. Continuing to monitor your weight frequently will help you keep it off. Watching your cholesterol, Lp-PLA2 or glucose serum levels will let you know that you are also on track for extending your life, making those extra years more enjoyable and taking control of how your body holds up in your twilight years.

Vitamin K and Bones

I read an interesting discussion concerning Vitamin K2 and bones the other day that reminded me again of the confusion that surrounds Vitamin K. There are several forms of Vitamin K (Vitamin K1, Vitamin K2 and Vitamin K3).


Most people have heard about Vitamin K1 and its importance for helping hemophiliacs avoid bleeding to death. This may lead you to believe that if you take Vitamin K, your blood might clot. The good news is that though Vitamin K1 does help stop the bleeding for a hemophiliac, it does not cause clotting.


Now that we have that out of the way, what I really want to focus on is Vitamin K2 - which also has 2 forms-MK-4 and MK-7. MK-4 is the natural form - and is most easily absorbed.


In recent years there has been a lot of research on the other forms of Vitamin K. Also, there is a vast difference between the synthetic man-made Vitamin K3 and the natural Vitamin K2 which is recommended for bones as well as heart health.


In the bone, Vitamin K2 -the MK-4 form, has been shown to decrease fractures and has been approved by the Ministry of Health in Japan since 1995 for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. It has been demonstrated to decrease fractures up to 87%!


Sadly Vitamin K2 therapy has not been approved by our FDA for osteoporosis treatment. Instead they continue to approve the dangerous bisphosphonate drugs even after ordering a warning on the label that those drugs contribute to brittle bones - in October 2010.


Isn't it interesting to note that Japan has a much lower incidence of osteoporosis than the United States & the UK where bisphosphonates are the standard treatment?


Vitamin K2 helps to carry calcium to the bones where it is needed. But a lack of Vitamin K2 allows the calcium to be deposited in the arteries and other soft tissue causing hardening of the arteries and many other cardiac problems as well as osteoporosis.


The sad part of this scenario is the widely prescribed use of coumadin which completely destroys Vitamin K2. Many doctors prescribe this drug for seniors, in spite of the well-known side-effects, while at the same time they encourage their patients to take large amounts of calcium.


That combination produces hardening of the arteries (or arterial calcification) and heart problems as well as osteoporosis.


Some Vitamin K2 could be produced by certain bacteria in the intestines but the abuse of antibiotics in our country prevents this from happening. You see, the good Vitamin K2 producing bacteria in the intestines are destroyed by the antibiotics along with the bad bacteria.


I am happy to learn that an increasing number of physicians have begun to integrate nutritional and supplement therapy into their practices to provide their patients with remedies and preventive measures for coping with some of these serious conditions without side effects.

Obesity Can Kill

Obesity - there, I've said it! Most of you, I'm sure, have given this ugly word a thought or two, especially in light of our most recent holiday season. I believe it's time to give it a little more than just a thought and, more importantly, start to seriously consider acting on these thoughts before this word becomes a serious detriment to your health! Obesity is fast becoming an epidemic in this country as the numbers below will demonstrate. And please don't make the mistake of assuming that it's just a cosmetic issue. Far from it. As you will see, obesity can have a drastic effect on your life, in all the wrong ways. Frankly, it can kill. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, there are nearly 100 million Americans - including 40 million Baby Boomers - who are overweight or even obese, and therefore, face risks of various chronic diseases in addition to potential muscular-skeletal problems. This, in spite of the fact that we are supposedly the generation that is the savviest in terms of exercise and good eating habits! Did you know, for example, that between the ages of 30-39, 47% of women in the USA are considered either overweight/obese. And just in case you guys though I forgot about you, between the ages of 50-59, 73% of us are overweight/obese! These are not insignificant numbers!


But what is obesity? Well, I'm glad you asked. There is a handy formula to help us calculate whether our middle-age spread is going, or has gone, too far. It is called the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared, then multiplying by 704.5.A desirable BMI is 21. Overweight begins at 25 and obesity is 30 or higher.


The medical implications of this are many. Large clinical studies link obesity to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis and some cancers. Yes, I said cancer. The American Heart Association has recently reclassified obesity upward to a major risk factor for a heart attack.


Anyone who has gained more than 25 pounds since age 18 should seriously consider seeing a primary care physician. And please do this before you start an exercise program. You could well be on the road to diabetes or have signs of impending coronary artery disease and not know it. Only a thorough medical check-up will tell you whether you are developing any of these conditions. So while you should be lauded for wanting to adjust your lifestyle to combat this problem, get a check-up first to make sure you can follow-thru with these admirable desires safely!


You also may be thinking that you've tried shedding pounds before to achieve your "ideal" weight and have been disappointed. It is perfectly natural to feel this way but you shouldn't. I suggest not thinking about the term "ideal", instead think "healthier". It's a lot better that individuals who are overweight or obese focus on a healthier weight, rather than the possibly unachievable "ideal" weight. Remember, "Ideal" is just a bunch of numbers on some insurance chart- they do not take into consideration individual nuances that may make the "ideal" impossible to attain. A "healthier" weight is much more realistic and can translate into just a 5-10 percent weight loss. It will make a difference.


Good- now you're motivated. That's the first and, in my opinion, the most important step. The next step is action. That starts with a visit to your physician to discuss the plan that is best suited to your particular needs. But whatever that plans is, please keep one very important fact in mind - there is no quick fix! This will be the start of a marathon that will hopefully last the rest of your life, not a sprint for a couple of months.


Get together with your primary care physician to develop a program of weight reduction and maintenance. Remember, it can be done and is being done every day. Good luck

Schools and day-care establishments are the venues from where children are almost certainly to get infested.


But the truth is, I don't like this plan. The primary reason is that when small children return to school, they have to cope with a new hassle. Yes, they get bullied just because of the fact that they once had lice in their hair.


Head-shaving is taken into account to be a possible route, but the fact of the matter is that most students don't feel comfy with it, most notably a girl. Most young people will feel unwanted in school without hair. Not to mention the smart comments they will receive from fellow kids.


Plus, there is no assurance that after the hair grows up, they won't get lice again. Just like other methods, head-shaving is also a short-term solution.


Head lice treatment is required when a person's head is infested by lice. Lice are not risky or nasty and they don't transfer any disease either.


So, be calm if you get them... and be cool with those who have them.
