Deviated Septum - Disorder Correction or Aesthetic Solution

The question is common today: are the surgeries aesthetic or corrective? Most people rather go for beauty jobs but tend to adjust with their disorders! Deviated septum surgery is less of corrective surgery, as it is done when the nasal septum is deviated to such an extent where breathing becomes difficult. It is more of an aesthetic job, better known as rhinoplasty.

Septum is the bone and cartilage which divides the nasal cavity equally. Sometimes, it could be slightly deviated but does not cause any breathing problem. The shape of the nasal cavity could be the cause of chronic sinusitis. Approximately 80 percent of the nasal septum are off-center but are generally not noticed. It is deviated only when the septum is severely shifted and causes difficulty in breathing. The crooked septum can also interfere with drainage of the sinuses causing sinus infections.

Deviated septum can be caused by trauma or can be a congenital defect due to compression of nose during birth. Bad deviation can cause nasal congestion (may be one-sided), blockage of either or both nostrils, recurring sinus infections or nose bleeds, postnasal drip, noisy breathing during sleep, facial pain or headaches.

People also have various reasons for nasal airway obstruction like a septal deviation, anatomic abnormalities, and reactive edema from infected areas, mucosal hypertrophy and allergic problems. An ENT specialist can determine the cause of chronic sinusitis and nasal obstruction.

The treatment for such deviations is the surgical process of septoplasty or the deviated septum rhinoplasty. Nose surgeons or facial plastic surgeons can take care of the medical correction and the aesthetic part of it too by surgery, as no medication can correct it. One can watch the detailed videos of the deviated septum surgery with top medical videos online.

Septoplasty is the surgical procedure for straightening the septum. It is performed through the nostrils; accordingly, no bruising or external signs occur. The surgery may also include treatment for chronic sinusitis and sleep apnea. Endoscopy may be used to visualize the nasal passages, evaluate the septum shape and make a route for minimum bleeding and inflammation. During the surgery, badly crooked portions may be removed partly or entirely or they may be re-adjusted and reinserted in the nose. Nasal packing after the surgery is inserted to prevent excessive postoperative bleeding.

While generally people do not even take notice of the deviation for a lifetime, in today's showbiz, everybody gives thought to the aesthetic appeal and enhance their looks and hence take the decision of a septoplasty clubbed with a rhinoplasty surgery.
